Education HOME PAGE >Fast Reading

Fast Reading

Fast reading does not simply mean looking at some text and speaking it out. One should understand and to some extent remember, at least for a small period of time, what one read. It can be one of the most useful things during the academic period of your life because being able to read fast can help us learn more in less amount of time and this would ultimately lead to positive effects in the exam results.

Japan is said to be a country where most of the students have reading as a hobby and fast reading is also said to be very popular there. It is because of this that practically all the bookstores in Japan will have most of the world's best-selling books translated into Japanese language. This is in spite of the fact that Japanese language is not easy for any reader. Similar is the case of North America to some extent, where many people are passionate readers. There are, however, some people who read text straight through from top to bottom. But this approach is devastating as it reduces your ability to remember what you read.

There are fast reading techniques, which can help us increase your speed of reading. These techniques depend on size of text, the material contents whether it is technical or linguistic, etc. Although you may need them in short articles, there are techniques that can help you use your other than conscious mind for fast reading. There are other much more powerful techniques as well. Using these techniques can increase your speed of reading comprehension dramatically.

One of the techniques is to use the approach of arranging a jigsaw puzzle. With this technique building sections can become very easy. Section wise approach will help us know the placement of the piece the movement we pick it up. By the time the puzzle is over you will realize that you did not even think about it consciously. Its fast and gentle process makes it easy and fun.

The overview of the book to be read is same as the complete photo / design on the puzzle box. Having gone thru the overview will help to go to the next step of building the frame. And the frame can be build starting from edge piece. But stirring thru the pieces is not the right way. Divide the entire bundle into sets of handful pieces. Go thru the first set look for the edge pieces and keep the remaining in another box. In the process try to remember the piece you have gone thru. By the time you go thru all the pieces the frame is ready.

You did not realize but you already started using your other than conscious mind while going thru all the pieces. That mind remembers the similar patterns so that you can place them properly the next time you see them. By the time you consciously know which piece comes where in the sequence the entire puzzle is done.

The technique of reading fast requires a similar approach. You normally go thru the overview, introduction and report of the book. Then, the information regarding who wrote the book, why and where was the book written gives you the significance of the book. Thus the framework is ready. The remaining part of reading the chapters is like assembling the puzzle.
