‘I adore Sanjay Dutt’

Ekta Kapoor on her favourite actor, her upcoming trip to Turkey and whether foreign locales help TV serials

Ekta Kapoor is nervous. “I’m keeping my fingers crossed,” she says. It’s to do with her movie
Shootout at Lokhandwala, that she has co-produced with Sanjay Gupta. “I want people to like the movie,” she says.
This film means a lot to her for various reasons. “Appu (director Apurva Lakhia) has worked very hard. Tusshar is playing a different role and he’s very good. In fact, initially he was sceptical but Sanjay, Apurva and everybody was very sure he should do it. Tusshar was then convinced. Shabbir too is making his debut in the movie. And the icing is Sanjay Dutt’s in it.”
So is Dutt her favourite actor? “Oh yes! I adore him.”
Talking about how Gupta and she came together for this film Ekta says, “I saw his movie Zinda. I thought it was one of the best movies I’d seen. I called him up and we met. I’d also read somewhere that he wanted to make a movie on this concept. Everything fell into place and we teamed up.”
Meanwhile she’s equally busy with her TV shows. In fact she’s set to take her Kasamh Se and Kayamath teams to Turkey.
Do foreign locales really help a show? “If the story requires a twist then it’s nice to have a new location. Foreign locales and visuals are different. It gives a good break from the usual.”
Incidentally, there’s a suspense element in Kayamath that will be shot there. “The mystique of Turkey will add to the mystery of the show. It helps to exploit the drama of a show,” she smiles
But a few years ago when she just stepped into the television industry did she envisage this? “It’s a big triumph. TV is growing everyday. Soon we will have niche programming for youngsters, urban and rural audiences etc,” she avers.
And finally, what about her eternal favourite character Tulsi in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi? “We will be taking a decision on that very soon,” she says. So, is Padmini Kolhapure coming in or will it be Gautami Gadgil? “You’ll know soon,” she signs off.
