Being the son of a corporate biggie, one wouldn’t really expect Ram Kapoor to get into acting. Well, his family surely didn’t. But he was determined, that too since the time he was in the ninth standard. “When I was in Macmillan College, I did the lead role in Aamir Raza Hussain’s Charlie’s Aunt. Initially I didn’t want to do it. I was scared. But later, after seeing the acclaim I got, I just decided I wanted to pursue acting. I didn’t have the guts to tell at home, though,” recounts Ram. Sometime later, when they were in America on a holiday, he dropped the bomb! “My father was shocked when I told them I wanted to study acting. I’m sure he had some set plans for his son. Of course later, he was convinced and advised me to focus completely on what I wanted to do. I then joined the Method School of Acting there,” says Ram, glad about all that he learnt at the school, especially that one tip —“Luck plays a crucial role in our field. We students were always told that from all actors across the globe, only two per cent actually make a living out of acting. 98 per cent are looking for work and struggling.”
But the best part of his course was when Robert De Niro — somebody he idolised from childhood — actually handed over the diploma at his graduation ceremony. “I couldn’t believe it! I was getting the diploma from him. I had tears in my eyes. My mom who was present also had tears in her eyes because she knew what I felt.”
That was a few years ago. Ram has come a long way since then. After doing a few TV serials, he took a break in 2002 to pursue films. He’s now back on TV and his character Jai Walia in Kasamh Se seems to be getting popular by the day. |
