Mangalagiri Sarees


The Mangalagiri saris and dress materials are made from Mangalgiri cotton, which is quite popular here. Mangalagiri, located 12 Kms from Vijayawada is also an important pilgrimage center in Andhra Pradesh. Mangalgiri , located 12 Kms from Vijayawada is a prominent pilgrimage center in Andhra Pradesh . It is famous for the Panakala Swamy temple Narasimha Swamy temple in Mangalgiri town. Mangalagiri means 'The auspicious hill'. The picturesque hill was visited by the great Sri Krishna Deva Raya. The mangalgiri saris have graceful strains of gold all over. These sarees are available in cotton and silk, with pure silver zari and brocade designs in the border. The bright mangalgiri saris have pleasant colours with golden dots, leaves, parrots or simple geometrical designs.


Venkatagiri sari

Venkatagiri saris are woven with locally made jalas and are among the best examples of the jacquard weave. The weaving is fine and the body of the sari is in sheer cotton, ornamented with gold motifs like dots, coins, leaves, parrots, or simple geometric designs.

The wide variety was evolved over the centuries because of its close links with the religious and social customs of different people. Bandhani work involves tying and dyeing of pieces of cotton or silk cloth. The main colours used in Bandhani are yellow, red, green and black. Bandhani work, after the processing is over, results into a variety of symbols including, dots, squares, waves and strips. The main colours used in Bandhani are natural. In fact all colours in bandhani are dark, no Rajasthan is one of the most important centre of tie and dye textile. Each area, each caste and each tribe has its special designs.

In West Bengal they are called Jamdani and follow the traditional patterns. Twisted yarn is closely woven together and so the saris are more lasting. Initially the Jamdani saris were woven for the nobles of North India. Now this art is still practiced in Tanda and Varanasi. This inlay technique is fully indigenous.
