A powerful industrialist Govardhan Virani lives with his wife, three sons, daughters-in-law and grandchildren, in his family home, ironically named Shantiniketan. Ironically, because his three daughters-in-law - Savita, Daksha and Gayatri - love nothing better than to put the rest of the family through trying times. To make matters worse, Mihir, the eldest grandson, marries Tulsi, the daughter of the poor family pujari. Tulsi is made the target of much ridicule, till she decides to give her three mothers-in-law - Savita, Daksha and Gayatri - as good as she gets it from them.

The story opens with Kesar and her family waiting for their close friends from Mumbai to arrive and celebrate Lohri with them. These friends are Dharam Mallyaa childhood friend of Kuljeet, his wife Saroj, Dharam's secretary Happy Singh, Happy's wife Shanti and Jaswant and their son.
Dharam arrives with an agenda. During the visit Dharam asks Kuljeet, Parmeet and Teji if they would agree to marry Kesar to his grandson Rudr. Rudr, a city slicker comes to Ambala with his PA Abhi to meet Kesar and her family. Kesar and Rudr take to each other and Kesar goes to her brother, niece and nephew to meet the Mallyas in Mumbai. Though she is radically different from the sophisticated Mallyas, she does not fit into their lifestyle.
Despite being from a small town, a mentally emancipated Kesar makes the lofty decision to leave her adulterous husband and refuses to adhere to the society norms that expect her to put on a pedestal a husband who does not deserve to be revered.

Married in a rich family, Kkusum loses her child due to a miscarriage. Desperate to give the family an heir she brings in Mahi to be the surrogate mother. Due to various misunderstandings, Kkusum is forced to leave the Kapoor house and is shocked when she realises that she is pregnant. she dedicates the next eighteen years to bring up her daughter Kumud and inculcate in her the idealistic values she’s held close to heart herself.
Meanwhile, Kkusum’s husband Abhay brings up his daughter Kali with Mahi’s help. Amidst all the doting over and pampering Kali grows up to be a spoilt brat. Kali forces Abhay to get married to Mahi. Destiny brings Kkusum and Abhay face to face, but its too late. Kali and Kumud go through their youth abhoring each other, and fall in love with Garv and Ksitij. Their fates cross paths when Kumud ends up marrying Garv instead of Kshitij. Kkusum watches helplessly as Kali tries to woo Garv bac and Kumud tries to save her married life.
The two half sisters come to loggerheads again and this time, kkusum decides to take charge of the situation.
